This is not a work of military history per se, what is does is give an excellent explanation as to how the whites came to lose the civil war and (more importantly) why. In this respect it is the best I've read on the conflict. This one is a "must" for those wanting a broader perspective of the Russian Civil War.

This account of the Russian Civil War, originally published in , combines a vivid narrative of the military events with a biographical discussion of the White Generals, figures of the former Imperial Russian Army offices who led the separate campaigns against the Red Soviets - men such as Kornilov, Alekseev, Kolchak, Denikin, Wrangel, Yudenich and the Finnish Yudeniol Marshal .   For our latest newsstand-only special issue, The Civil War Almanac, we asked a panel of Civil War historians—J. Matthew Gallman, Matthew C. Hulbert, James Marten, and Amy Murrell Taylor—for their opinions on a variety of popular topics, including the war's most overrated and underratred commanders, top turning points, most influential women, and best depictions on film.

Anton Ivanovich Denikin (Анто́н Ива́нович Дени́кин); December 16 [O.S. December 4] – August 8, ) was Lieutenant General of the Imperial Russian Army () and one of the foremost generals of the White movement in the Russian Civil War. A really excellent, pro-White account of the Russian Civil War. Not really intended for the casual reader. Trust me, this book requires a ton of familiarity with Russian and Soviet history. It fills a needed gap in the historiography concerning both the Whites and the Civil War.

It begins with a skewed description of the February revolution which grossly underplays the role of the Mensheviks; Luckett assumes without argument that the war should have been.
